What Should You Paint First In A House?

When painting a house, it’s best to start with the ceilings and then move on to the walls, followed by any trim or other details.

Here’s the typical order of painting…

  1. Ceilings – Painting the ceilings first allows any drips or splatters to be easily covered when painting the walls later. Use a roller with an extension pole for efficient coverage, starting from one corner and working your way across the ceiling in manageable sections.
  2. Walls – Once the ceilings are dry, paint the walls. Begin by cutting in along the edges with a brush to create clean lines where the walls meet the ceiling, trim, and corners. Then, use a roller to fill in the larger areas, working in small sections and overlapping each stroke slightly to ensure even coverage.
  3. Trim and Details – After the walls have dried completely, paint the trim, baseboards, door frames, and any other details using a smaller brush for precision. Take care to tape off adjacent surfaces to avoid accidentally getting paint on the walls or floors.
  4. Doors and Windows – Finally, paint the doors and windows, starting with the frames and working your way to the panels or sashes. Be sure to allow adequate drying time between coats and handle the doors and windows carefully to avoid smudging or damaging the freshly painted surfaces.

By following this order, you can achieve a clean and professional-looking paint job while minimizing the risk of smudges, drips, or other imperfections. Use high-quality paint and tools, properly prepare the surfaces, and work methodically to ensure the best results.
